In water presence of minerals like calcium and magnesium cause hardness of water. Soft water softeners create scaling problems in water heaters. It is treated by chemical or physical methods which includes passing hard water through columns, filled with resins. They absorb calcium and magnesium ions from the hard water. Over a period of time, when the resin has been exhausted, it needs to be recharged or replaced.
